Ways to Serve

SUPPORT WEST HOUSTON ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES

Grace and Friends of Westchase are partnering together with West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) to collect food and other items for families who may find themselves needing extra help. Check out the list below to see how you can help our community and make Jesus visible. WHAM is requesting volunteers to help package drive-thru pick-up food packs and hand out packs through WHAM’s distribution line (see attached a picture). To volunteer people can show up at WHAM starting at 8 a.m. Monday-Friday.You also can purchase and ship items to WHAM from their Amazon wish list.

Do you have a tutoring or teaching background? Are you looking for a way to use your background during Covid-19? If so, consider volunteering as a tutor to help families dealing with the stress of school at home. We are compiling a list of people who are interested in teaching any core curriculum subject (i.e. Math, English, Reading, Spelling, History). You can choose the online communication application that you and the recipient family are most comfortable with during your first contact with a parent. To learn more or to serve as a tutor, please contact Margaret Ellis at 713-501-5140.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBORS

As much as you are able within the suggested guidelines with care and compassion, reach out to your neighbors, the elderly, the vulnerable and see how you can help make Jesus visible to them. The simple gesture of being connected and in community will provide great comfort to those who feel most isolated.

We’d love for you to share these “Stories of Grace” online with the Grace family so we can we celebrate and stay socially connected even as we must be physically distant.

Steps for Prevention

Public health officials recommend the following steps people should take to reduce their risk of getting and spreading any viral respiratory infections. These include:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces.
  • Stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill.

A Prayer for a Pandemic

“May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. AMEN” (Author Unknown)”
